Born January 12, 1949, Murakami began to write when he was 29. Western influences like Jack Kerouac and Kurt Vonnegut distinguish him from other Japanese authors. Among his best books are Norwegian Wood, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore, and 1Q84.
Happy 66th Birthday, Haruki Murakami!
